Michele's approach to this signature design is deliberate and thoughtful. He explains that he needed time to understand and interpret the brand's established aesthetic, a code introduced by his predecessors, Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri. "I didn't want to rush into it," he says, "because I found it weird and I wasn't yet familiar with this territory."
The designer's process involves constantly questioning his own vision and that of his predecessors. "I'm always asking myself, 'What is Valentino? What do I do? And what can I keep from what has been done before?'"
One notable instance of serendipity occurred with the viral appearance of an archival design in the trailer for 'The Devil Wears Prada 2' movie. However, Michele's focus remains on his cinematic interpretation of the house.
The collection showcases an increased emphasis on accessories, suggesting a strategic move to attract customers with more affordable price points. This is evident in the nearly 50 iterations of the DeVain shoulder bag, a testament to Michele's penchant for flamboyance.
But it's the clothing that truly showcases the seismic shift in Michele's approach. He embraces his maximalist roots while exploring a new, stripped-back aesthetic. "Absence is becoming an element of decoration," he says, "like creating the negative of my maximalism."
His new style is characterized by vibrant color blocking, fluid silk textures, and exaggerated shoulders, reminiscent of the '80s. Dresses feature archival logos and patterns, and play with contrasting weights, combining lingerie-inspired pieces with leather jackets and shearling coats.
Michele's attention to detail is evident in the essential shapes he cuts from lightweight black-and-white tweed, poplin, linen, and taffeta. He creates a cropped jacket, a striped chemisier minidress, tailored pieces with scalloped trims, and a vichy skirt suit embellished with a pleated motif.

"I'm happy that this process of looking at empty spaces and things I remove to see better what remains is so apparent," he says. "It's like going to therapy and wondering: 'What happens if I look at things from a different angle?'" This collection is a fascinating study in evolution, showcasing Valentino's ability to adapt and reinvent itself while staying true to its core identity.
