Sri Lanka's Health Minister, Nalinda Jayatissa, has announced enhanced border health precautions against the Nipah virus, following recent cases in India and Bangladesh. In a statement, the minister emphasized the proactive measures taken by the health ministry to safeguard the country's borders, particularly with the surge in tourist arrivals. Over the past four days, more than 40,000 tourists have entered Sri Lanka, and January's total arrivals reached a record 277,000. This influx has prompted the ministry to maintain heightened vigilance and preventive protocols at all entry points, including airports. The minister highlighted the importance of monitoring mechanisms in reducing the risk of potential Nipah virus transmission through inbound travel. Furthermore, the health sector has been closely monitoring the virus's developments, especially after confirmed cases and fatalities in India. The authorities are prepared to respond swiftly if necessary, especially with the upcoming international sporting events in Colombo, which are expected to attract foreign visitors. The minister also cited tourism figures as a critical factor in the decision to intensify health precautions, underscoring the need for continued vigilance to protect both tourists and the local population.
