Kate Winslet's Revelations on 'First Intimate Experiences'
In a recent podcast episode of 'Team Deakins', Kate Winslet opened up about her debut in Peter Jackson's 1994 drama-thriller 'Heavenly Creatures'. The film, which also stars Melanie Lynskey, tells the story of two teens with a dangerously obsessive friendship. When discussing her portrayal of Juliet, Winslet shared a personal revelation: her 'first intimate experiences' as a teenager were with girls.
'I'll share something I've never shared before,' Winslet said. 'Some of my first intimate experiences as a young teen were actually with girls. I'd kissed a few girls, and I'd kissed a few boys, but I wasn't particularly evolved in either direction.'
She continued, 'At that stage in my life, I was curious, and I think there was something about the really intense connection that those two women had that I profoundly understood. I was so immediately sucked into the vortex of that world they were in that it became horrendously damaging to both of them, and they had huge insecurities and vulnerabilities.'
Winslet explained that while she couldn't fully comprehend the darker aspects of the film, she resonated with the profound personal connections that can form during youth and vulnerability.
'Heavenly Creatures' marked a turning point in Winslet's career. She revealed that she had never held a film script before auditioning for the role. It was also Jackson's first foray into drama, following his work on horror films like 'Bad Taste' and 'Dead Alive', and the dark comedy 'Meet the Feebles'.
Following her breakthrough, Winslet went on to star in 'Sense and Sensibility', 'Jude', and 'Hamlet' before landing the iconic role of Rose in 'Titanic' in 1997.
