Jordan Smith's Unbelievable Journey: From Unknown to Australian Open Champion (2026)

The Unlikely Champion: Jordan Smith's Rise to Glory

In a thrilling twist of fate, Jordan Smith, an unknown name just moments ago, emerged as the champion of the Australian Open's 1 Point Slam. But how did this happen, and who exactly is Jordan Smith?

The 1 Point Slam, a unique tournament within the Australian Open, brought together an eclectic mix of participants, from tennis icons to unexpected Australian celebrities. Smith's journey to the $1 million prize on Rod Laver Arena was nothing short of extraordinary.

"Waking up to this incredible feeling hasn't quite sunk in yet," Smith shared with ABC News Breakfast. "It's overwhelming, amazing, and surreal all at once.

Starting with his namesake, Bailey Smith, a star of the Geelong AFL, the competition kicked off with a forehand miss. This was followed by an intense rally with Laura Pigossi, the women's world number 86, where Smith's bold play paid off, sending Pigossi's backhand volley long.

The next challenge was a nerve-wracking matchup against Jannik Sinner, the two-time defending champion. When asked for advice, Sinner humorously replied, "Maybe he doesn't need advice if I double fault." However, Smith revealed he sought guidance from the pros on the sidelines, describing them as "friendly and down-to-earth."

But advice wasn't necessary as Sinner's one and only serve hit the net cord, ending the match prematurely. World number one Carlos Alcaraz, courtside, couldn't resist mocking Sinner's tight attempt.

Next, Smith faced Amanda Anisimiova, the runner-up in the last two women's grand slam singles finals. After a taxing point against Daniil Medvedev, Anisimiova's forehand return fell short, sending Smith into the final.

On the other side of the draw, Joanna Garland, the women's world number 117, had already defeated men's major runner-ups Nick Kyrgios and Alex Zverev, as well as Olympic silver medallist Donna Vekić. Fresh from winning the WTA Canberra International last week, Garland chose to serve but sent her backhand wide, handing the victory and the cash to Smith.

Smith was speechless on the court, but later revealed his plans to use the money to buy a house with his partner, Jess, who was in the stands at Melbourne Park. Jess was joined by Smith's parents, Neil and Michelle, who introduced him to tennis at the tender age of three.

For over 30 years, Neil and his wife have run the Castle Hill Tennis Academy in Sydney's north-west. Neil coached Jordan, the youngest of three, who won five national junior titles (two singles and three doubles) from 2008 to 2012. Jordan then spent a year on an athletic scholarship at Gonzaga in the US college scene in 2015-16.

Homesickness, the challenges of COVID, and the financial struggles of being a lower-ranked player on tour (Smith reached a career-high singles ranking of 1,141 in 2023) brought him back to Castle Hill, where he began coaching alongside his dad and brothers, Blake and Cameron.

Smith's journey to the top continued with his successful qualification and eventual victory at the North Shore Open, earning him the title of NSW state champion.

"My whole family was stunned I made it through the high-pressure tournament. I was too," Smith admitted. "I tried to keep a level head, smile, and enjoy the moment. It just kept happening; I kept getting the points."

And there you have it - the story of Jordan Smith, an unexpected champion who beat the odds and took home the grand prize. But here's where it gets controversial: Should the 1 Point Slam be taken more seriously? Is it a true test of tennis skill, or just a lucky draw? What are your thoughts? Let's discuss in the comments!
