Hurricanes Fall Short in Seattle: Recap, Analysis & Player Reactions | NHL 2026 (2026)

The Carolina Hurricanes' impressive streak is over, and a tough road trip has begun with a frustratingly close loss! It's a tough pill to swallow when a team plays well but still comes up short, and that's exactly what happened to the Hurricanes in Seattle. They suffered their first regulation defeat since mid-January, a 2-1 nail-biter against the Seattle Kraken on Monday.

Carolina started the game with a clear territorial advantage, showing early promise. However, as is often the case in hockey, small errors can lead to big consequences. In the second period, the opportunistic Kraken capitalized on two key chances, scoring twice in a rapid 5 minutes and 26 seconds to build a 2-0 lead. It was a swift turnaround that left the Hurricanes playing catch-up.

But here's where it gets interesting: the Hurricanes didn't fold. They rallied, pouring on the pressure and managed to pull within one goal with just 90 seconds left in the second period. Nikolaj Ehlers unleashed a powerful shot from the slot, a true laser that found the back of the net. This goal injected much-needed momentum into Carolina's game.

And this is the part most people miss: despite the surge of energy from Ehlers' goal, the Hurricanes couldn't quite convert that momentum into an equalizer in the third period. They controlled play once again, generating a decent number of scoring opportunities. Yet, their shots were either blocked by a tenacious Seattle defense – they tallied an impressive 23 blocks on the night – or stopped by Kraken goaltender Joey Daccord, who was a wall in net, making 35 saves. It was a testament to Seattle's defensive effort and Daccord's stellar performance.

On the other end, Carolina's netminder Frederik Andersen made 13 saves on 15 shots. While he played well, this game marked his first regulation loss in his last seven starts, a streak that highlights his otherwise strong recent play.

Stats & Standouts:

  • Nikolaj Ehlers continues his hot streak, scoring his second goal in his last three games and tallying points in four of his last five outings. He's definitely finding his scoring touch!
  • This loss puts an end to Carolina's impressive 12-game point streak (a record of 10-0-2), which was their longest of the season. It's a significant milestone to achieve, even if it ended with a defeat.

What the Players and Coach Had to Say:

Head Coach Rod Brind'Amour reflected on the game, stating, "I thought we played well... You have to score more than one with the amount of zone time that we had. And with the opportunities that we had, you have to find a way to get more than one [goal]." This sentiment was echoed by Jordan Staal, who added, "We really just didn't capitalize on our chances. They're a team that, when they're up, they hunker down well, and they don't give you much. [They give you] a lot of shots from the outside, and I don't think we did a good enough job of getting in front of them. They box out well. We had a chance to tie it up. For the most part, it was a good game; it just didn't really click offensively."

Staal also touched on puck management, acknowledging, "There were some turnovers, for sure. That kind of cost us a couple of goals. There could have been a few decisions with the puck offensively that we could have done a better job [with]. Shooting when we need to or passing when we need to. The execution we needed wasn't there offensively, and we came up short."

Despite the frustration, Brind'Amour remains optimistic about the team's performance level, saying, "If we can play like that, we're going to be fine. Tonight was just one of those nights. We didn't get a bounce all night. We've got to keep working for them, which I thought we did tonight."

Looking ahead to the next game, Staal emphasized the importance of moving on: "It's about the next one. We'll learn from what we had going on tonight, take care of the bodies, and get ready for the next game. These road trips are tough. Everyone's got to go through them, and we've got to have a little better effort and get on a roll on this trip."

What's Next for the Hurricanes?

The team will have a day of rest on Tuesday before heading to Vancouver to face the Canucks on Wednesday, March 4th, at 10:00 p.m. ET. Their next home game is scheduled for Tuesday, March 10th, against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Now, I'm curious to hear your thoughts! Do you think the Hurricanes were just a victim of bad luck and a strong opposing goalie, or were there deeper issues with their offensive execution that cost them the game? Let me know in the comments below!
