How South African Police Cracked a Massive Vehicle Smuggling Ring: KZN to Mozambique (2026)

SAPS cracks down on a vehicle-smuggling pipeline ferrying cars from KwaZulu-Natal to Mozambique

A dedicated police team in northern KwaZulu-Natal reports ongoing, substantial wins against vehicle-smuggling rings operating along the Mozambique border, with dozens of stolen cars recovered in a string of recent operations.

The Emanguzi-based task force has stepped up its efforts, intercepting stolen vehicles before they reach the Kosi Bay border. Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk states that 20 vehicles have been recovered and five suspects detained in the latest round of arrests.

The recovered vehicles comprise 11 bakkies (pickup trucks), seven SUVs, a minibus, and a sedan, all seized during separate intelligence-led operations. Investigators traced the vehicles to thefts committed across Durban Central, Durban North, Westville, Chatsworth, Pinetown, and Umhlali.

Latest interception near the Kosi Bay border

In the most recent operation, officers acted on information about a vehicle bound for Mozambique. The car was stopped on 9 June 2025, and a suspect carrying fraudulent border-crossing documents was arrested. Early investigations suggest the suspect may be connected to vehicle insurance fraud, with further inquiries ongoing.

Van Wyk noted that a national intervention remains in place, pooling SAPS units from crime intelligence, detectives, and specialized operational teams to curb cross-border crime in the region. Crimes under review include motor-vehicle theft, business and house robberies, hijackings, and violent offenses such as murder and attempted murder.

Broader successes in Limpopo’s smuggling corridor

Efforts to disrupt vehicle-smuggling networks extend beyond KwaZulu-Natal. IOL reported last year that Limpopo’s anti-smuggling task team earned praise for its dedication and effectiveness in intercepting stolen vehicles headed for the BeitBridge border with Zimbabwe.

Since its formation in December 2023, the Limpopo task team—comprising specialized detectives—has consistently disrupted major smuggling operations. Working with private security firms and other stakeholders, officers have seized high-powered 4x4 vehicles valued at millions of rand.

Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba indicated the team arrested 23 suspects and recovered 20 stolen vehicles valued at about R17 million. All the vehicles had been stolen in Gauteng and were intercepted before reaching Beitbridge or other border routes.

National policing focus on smuggling routes

Both KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo sit along critical smuggling corridors used by organized crime networks across South Africa and into neighboring countries. The Emanguzi and Limpopo operations illustrate how intelligence-led, coordinated action can slow the illegal movement of vehicles across borders.
