Nine of these changes resulted from terminations, while Mike Tomlin stepped down from the Pittsburgh Steelers, making way for new leadership. The Giants and Falcons have already appointed John Harbaugh and Kevin Stefanski to their respective head coaching roles.
Despite McDermott's impressive record, including eight playoff appearances and five AFC East division titles, the Bills fell short of the ultimate goal under his leadership. They went 8-8 in the playoffs, failing to advance to the Super Bowl. Prior to McDermott's hire, the Bills had not reached the playoffs since 1999. However, McDermott's impact on the team's mindset and their transformation into a consistent playoff contender cannot be overstated.
Bills owner Terry Pegula acknowledged McDermott's contributions, stating, 'Sean has done an admirable job leading our football team for the past 9 seasons.' He added, 'But I feel we are in need of a new structure within our leadership to give this organization the best opportunity to take our team to the next level.' The search for McDermott's replacement will be led by Brandon Beane, who will now serve as the President of Football Operations and General Manager. Pegula expressed confidence in Beane's leadership, stating, 'I have full faith in and have witnessed Brandon’s outstanding leadership style and have confidence in his abilities to lead our organization.'
