A Gymnast's Journey: Reconnecting with Roots in Manila
In a bold move, Aleah Finnegan, a 22-year-old gymnast, decided to embark on a new chapter of her athletic career, one that would lead her back to her cultural heritage. But here's where it gets intriguing: she chose to do so in the Philippines, a country she represents internationally.
"I knew this was my time for a change," Aleah shared with Olympics.com. "I wanted to immerse myself in a different environment, and what better way than to reconnect with my roots?"
Aleah's journey began in April, when she graduated and wrapped up her historic collegiate career, having helped her team secure their first NCAA title. With a successful chapter behind her, she set her sights on Manila, a city that would offer her a unique blend of familiarity and adventure.
"It's not just about the scenery," she explained. "It's about feeling connected to my heritage. I've represented the Philippines internationally since 2022, and now I get to experience it up close."
And experience it she did! Aleah's arrival in August was met with a warm welcome from her family, including cousins, aunts, and uncles. Her mother stayed for the first month to help her settle in, but soon Aleah was navigating her new life independently, training hard and exploring the vibrant city of Manila.
"My days are simple yet fulfilling," she said. "I train, and then I explore. Whether it's a new coffee shop, a restaurant, or making new friends, I'm embracing this opportunity."
Among her new friends are her training partners, the Philippines men's gymnastics team, including the renowned Carlos Yulo, a two-time Olympic gold medallist. "I've been training extensively with the men's team," Aleah revealed. "Carlos and the team have been incredibly supportive, ensuring I adjust well and stay prepared for the future."
Aleah's move also marked her return to full-time gymnastics training after a brief hiatus. With just two months to prepare, she competed in the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Jakarta, finishing an impressive 33rd in the all-around standings.
So, what's next for Aleah Finnegan? She's taking it one step at a time, focusing on her training and enjoying the journey. "We're just seeing where this path leads," she said with a smile.
